I've just nearly killed some kids….help!?
I was driving through an estate at 35mph, its dark. I was approaching some traffic lights which were on green. the lights switched very quickly to red (without going to amber) so i had to break quite hard as I noticed some children crossing along with an old man. I nearly hit them, the old man looked shaken, my daughter (who without my knowledge took her seat belt off) got flung into the back of my seat and onto the floor. I was quite badly shaken and have rang the council to complain about this. My question is basically, is it normal for traffic lights to do this? No one was hurt although I am now equipped with an extra amount of caution when approaching traffic lights
Yes i agree I shouldn’t have been going at 35mph and I should have approached with caution, however after driving for a while with no accidents it isn’t uncommon to get complacent. This has been the shock I needed to make sure I drive safetly. I do not want to put anyones life in danger and I will make sure it will never happen again. Thanks for all your advice :) I’ve calmed a bit, I’ve looked at what I have learned from this experience and the end, most definetly, justify the means.

No you are in the right, a traffic light must go to amber to prepare you to stop.

Woah! what a shock for you! As far as I’m concerned, the traffic lights should switch to amber before red. Don’t get too shaken up as this has happened to many people, good for you ringing the council! :) aliwb | Nov 19, 2009

green is not for go its for go if only safe to do so. you should approach as if they where to change any second. and if it was an estate you should of been doing 30 mph at very most.
with children and the dark you should slow down a little specially with your child on board

You should be careful, there could be technical problem as well. You can report it to police as well.

Contact your local police department. Explain what happened. They will dispatch an officer to investigate the light. If a problem is found the police will contact the city and have the light repaired.

This will prevent others from having the same problem you experienced. Reporting this may prevent an accident.

When you approach any traffic light even if its green you should be prepared for things like kids or other people walking out onto the road. The light should have gone to amber to let you know it was going to red but the onus is on you to make sure you can stop on time.
I’m glad you and your daughter and the others are all okay.

Sounds to me like the amber bulb has blown on the traffic light… there is no need to call the police, as all they will do is the same thing as below…

Visit the Direct Gov Website, and find the local authority for where the traffic light is located:
http://local.direct.gov.uk/LDGRedirect/i ndex.jsp?LGSL=567&LGIL=0&Service Name=Report%20a%20problem%20with%20a%20t raffic%20light

You will then be navigated to the local authority’s website with contact details for someone who will dispatch a team to fix the light.

On another note… most estates would be 30mph ;) James S | Nov 19, 2009

First of all you should be thankful that no one was hurt. The situation could have been much worse than it was. Secondly, you need to ensure that the passage way is clear before you just breeze through an intersection. Many times we take green lights for granted. Although we have been taught green means go, we should not forget that some pedestrians will jay walk. Jay walking is illegal and it is a good way for someone to be hurt or killed. If you see anyone in the cross walk, you should always stop even if there is a green because they have the right of way. As long as you saw them ahead of time, and made the adjustment then you did the right thing. I would also mention this to your city council. Perhaps the lights were not in working order. If you suspect that then report it. But paying attention is critical. Always be aware of your surroundings whether the light is green or not.

The traffic lights should have gone to amber before going to red, but you should have been driving slower as well. Normally you should stick to under 30mph in residential areas.

If James S is right sounds like having a cell phone or hard line connected to the town Maintenance Department and programmed to signal any fault would be a good idea. So, get cracking on letting a de@dbeat daddy patent something again ( ~ restore the free enterprise system that the Ron Reagan Revolution replaced with slave labor at the local Prison ~ ) and MAYBE someone with a SOUL could get the Job Done.

Communists like Ron Reagan, GHWB, GWB and Clinton (and likely OBAMA) are slow as a given rule to innovate, and cruel to those that would "show them up". This discourages new thought on old problems, like you’ve found. AND PEOPLE DIE as a result.
